The following is a poem by Emma Lazarus. It is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. Read the poem after you have read the article "The Great Immigration Debate".
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
This poem was written in 1883. Think about how the poem reflects the views of immigration for most Americans during that time. Do these sentiments ring true today?
Which approach should the U.S. take: deport illegal immigrants or create a path to legalization for them?
I think the US should create a path to legalization for illegal immigrants if they pay fines, learn English, do not have a criminal background, and they wait their turn to be considered. In the meantime we should give them free passes until they are given citizen ship or denied citizenship.
ReplyDeleteThe US should help the illegals gain citizenship.

ReplyDeleteI think that the US should create a path for the illegal immigrants as long as they agree to learn English and to take the time to become a legal citizen. However, if they refuse to learn English or take the time to become a legal citizen, then they should be deported.
ReplyDeleteI think that the US should try to create a path for illegal immigrants. If they can speak fluent English, fill out all the paperwork, and have no criminal records, they should be allowed to become a citizen and stay in the US. They are coming here for a better life, so they obviously look up to us. We should accept them, instead of being mean and throwing them out.
